about the artist.
Laura is a painter, a professional astrologer, and a writer based in Aspen, Colorado. She has been making large-scale abstract paintings for twenty years, developing a practice rooted in the elemental forces of the natural world — water, gravity, color, and time. She received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2009.
Her work has been featured on the cover of New York Cottages & Gardens (October 2017) and in ELLE magazine (September 2016). In 2018, Denver named her Artist of the Year in 5280 Magazine's Readers' Choice Awards. Her paintings are held in private collections across Colorado, California, and New York, as well as in several corporate collections. In 2016, she was invited to lead a mini-residency in Poured Action Painting as part of the Denver Art Museum's Demonstration Series, coinciding with the museum's landmark summer exhibition Women of Abstract Expressionism.
Laura has practiced astrology since 1999, beginning with hand-cast charts for friends and family. She deepened her studies in 2017 to include transit astrology, and began reading professionally during the pandemic. Her astrological practice is inseparable from her painting — the moon water ritual at the center of her studio process is a direct expression of how she understands time, cycles, and the natural world.
As a writer, Laura founded and ran Among the Colors — a creative editorial platform covering art, food, fashion, interviews with artists and female entrepreneurs, tarot, and poetry — for five years. The platform was featured in ELLEmagazine. She is a poet whose work is inspired by astrological transits, which she shares through her Substack and social media. She is currently at work on her first poetry book.
artist statement
My paintings are an investigation of movement, rhythm, and color — the forces that shape all living things. Water, gravity, time, space, color, and line play out across raw canvas at a scale that asks the viewer to step inside rather than stand apart. These elements sequence themselves into something that feels less made than remembered — a trace of how life takes form.
The process has a ritual at its center. I collect single-origin water from rivers, lakes, and the ocean during specific moon phases — a practice rooted in my work as a professional astrologer — and use it throughout each painting. This moon water dilutes the paint, shifts how pigment spreads and pools, changes the speed at which layers dry and interact. It carries the particular energy of place and time into the work's physical structure, making each painting not just a response to nature but a record of a specific moment within it.
