about the artist.

about the artist.

Laura Moretz makes large-scale abstract paintings from her studio in Aspen, Colorado. She has been building this body of work for over twenty years, developing a practice rooted in the elemental forces of the natural world: water, gravity, color, and time. She holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Her work has been featured on the cover of New York Cottages & Gardens, in ELLE magazine, and recognized by 5280 Magazine as Artist of the Year. In 2016 she was invited to lead a residency at the Denver Art Museum coinciding with Women of Abstract Expressionism, the museum's landmark summer exhibition. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections across Colorado, California, and New York.

Laura is also a professional astrologer and poet. She has practiced astrology since 1999 and reads professionally with a focus on transit astrology and timing. Her astrological practice is inseparable from her painting — the moon water ritual at the center of her studio process is a direct expression of how she understands cycles, place, and the natural world.

Among the Colors, her creative platform featured in ELLE magazine, is where painting, astrology, tarot, and writing live together. She is currently at work on her first poetry book.

artist statement

Laura Moretz's paintings are built from the forces that shape all living things. Water, gravity, color, and time move across raw canvas in bold, colorful washes of acrylic. Each work is made up of poured painting and various forms of mark making, building a surface that is both gestural and alive.

At the center of the process is ritual. Moretz collects single-origin water from rivers, lakes, and the ocean during specific moon phases, a practice rooted in her work as a professional astrologer, and uses it throughout each painting. This moon water dilutes the paint, shifts how pigment spreads and pools, carrying the particular energy of place and time into every layer.
